It all started way back in 2001 when Rod Bradley was tending bar at TBONZ in Mount Pleasant, and one of his favorite regulars, Jeff Brown, asked if he was interested in partnering with him to open a pub. Jeff had lots of experience with breakfast and lunch spots but no experience on the bar side, while Rod had bar experience and a degree in Hospitality Management. Now, they needed someone with extensive kitchen knowledge. Enter a bright 24-year-old Andy Reed. Andy had diverse experience from working in a variety of kitchens in the area.

The three worked together to develop a menu, design a space, and establish a culture of fun! “We wanted to create a pub where family and friends could gather and feel like they were a part of our family!”

The flagship Dog & Duck was opened in the Belle Hall Shopping Center on Long Point Road, and it was immediately welcomed by the community. Featuring great food, a fun atmosphere, and friendly service, it became the place to be for lunch, dinner, late-night snacks, and drinks with friends.

In 2004, the team decided to take the successful formula up to Summerville. In 2008, Rod and Jeff amicably parted ways, with Rod buying Jeff out of Belle Hall and Jeff taking over the Summerville location. Summerville, while not associated with the other Dog & Ducks, is still going strong and retains the name.

In 2008, Dog & Duck Park West opened in Mount Pleasant, where they became that area’s favorite neighborhood pub. The Clements Ferry Road location followed in 2019, and in 2023, the Moncks Corner location opened.

We get asked a lot if we’re a chain … NO WAY! We’re as local as it gets. We’ve all lived here for decades and have raised our families in this awesome town.

Our Mission Statement hasn’t changed since day one: “To create a social pub that brings friends and family together while providing a quality, consistent product along with excellent service and community involvement.”

We have had SO MANY great moments and memories over the years! We have employees who have worked with us for almost as long as we have been open! We have employees whose kids have worked with us. Customers’ kids who get their first jobs here because they have literally been eating here with their family since they were two! People have met at the bar and become lifelong friends/gotten married/had kids … there are just so many cool things that have happened within the walls of Dog & Duck!

We are driven by the moments when we are reminded how much the D&D means to the people that come here. It’s just like we imagined at the beginning … bringing people together and making them feel like family … a huge, wonderful family! We love to support the community and to be there for those who have been there for us, so we get involved in as many ways as we can!

We can’t thank you enough for your support over the years … and here’s to at least a couple more decades together!

Meet the Team

After graduating from Ferris State in Michigan with a Hospitality Management degree, I was a GM at Ruby Tuesdays for 8 years before moving to Charleston. Here, I started tending bar at TBONZ where I met my future wife, and my future business partner. Since opening the Dog & Duck in 2001, I have been dedicated to making it the best spot in town. Outside of that, I love spending time with my amazing kids, Ethan, EllaGrace, and Avery, and my smoking-hot wife, Alli (she made me write that.) I also love to hike, boat, golf, & travel. My teams are the Michigan Wolverines and the Detroit Lions and, I am a die-hard fan, fair warning.

Starting as a dishwasher at the age of 14, I had no idea I would find my passion in the restaurant industry. After working with many different concepts, I joined the Dog & Duck team at the Park West location nine years ago and have never looked back. I enjoy the fast-paced environment and how it changes every day, but what I truly love is the people. Meeting Guests and turning them into lifelong regulars and friends, as well as developing my team, is why I go to work every day. Outside of work, I enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, hanging out with my family, and taking care of my many, many pets.

After graduating from THE Ohio State University, I moved to sunny Charleston (if you’ve spent a winter in Ohio, you get it). After bopping around in F&B for a bit, I found my home at TBONZ in MTP, where I met some of the best friends of my life, and my hubs. I married Rod in 1997, welcomed Ethan in 1999, and opened Dog & Duck in 2001 with an ankle-biter at my feet! EllaGrace came in 2002, and Suprise-Avery in 2004. Although these kids are my everything, I am currently enjoying my empty nest! I run Dog & Duck’s beverage program, culture, & marketing. I get along with Rod 364 days of the year - the other day is RIVALY Saturday! Go BUCKEYES!

I love the restaurant industry because of the pace, energy, and opportunity for guest interactions. I am particularly passionate about training and helping others achieve their version of success. I have been lucky enough to work in this industry since 2001. When I am not trying to improve the Dog & Duck Training Program, I enjoy reading and gardening.

My hospitality career began at the age of 15 as a dishwasher at Falcon Camp in Carrolton, OH. I worked summers there until I graduated from Kenyon College in 2003 and took a full-time position with them. I enlisted in the US Air Force in 2006, and over 8 years and many deployments, I got to see much of the world. I married Chloe in 2012 and chose to leave the Air Force and reenter the hospitality industry in 2014. I worked in many kitchens around town, none more impactful than my 3 years in the scratch kitchen at Bacco Italian Restaurant on Houston Northcut. I began with Dog & Duck in 2019 and was the GM of our Park West location before taking over as GM of the Belle Hall location in 2023.

What’s With
the Flags?

Sooooo, we take sports pretty seriously here at the Dog & Duck. And with our staff’s roots in the Midwest and Northeast, there are rivalries aplenty among us! Ohio State vs. Michigan, Red Sox vs. Tigers, and Patriots vs. Lions … to name a few. Even our hot dogs are traced back to our staff’s roots … we serve the same hot dogs that are served in The Green Monster, Fenway Park, because of Andy and also because YUM!

Each fall, when the big college football rivalry games roll around, things tend to get a little crazy.

When we opened the first restaurant, we started a tradition that we would fly the flag of the team that won the Ohio State / Michigan game and the Clemson / Carolina game for a year until the next rivalry game. It’s a big deal … there’s a flag changing ceremony and lots of trash talk.

Recently, we’ve incorporated the local high schools and now we fly the flag of the Wando / Lucy Beckham winner and the Philip Simmons / Bishop England winner. Their principals get involved and they may have their own side bets … but we’re not spreading rumors.

So if you’re not a fan of any of these teams already, come by on game day and you’ll be forced to pick a side …. and join in the fun!
